Our surgeons at Thrive Reconstructive Surgery collaborate closely with local wound care physicians and outpatient facilities, tailoring each surgical plan to the unique needs of every non-healing wound. We carefully consider all previous treatments to ensure our approach is both thoughtful and effective.

Open communication with referring physicians throughout the healing journey allows us to coordinate care seamlessly and maximize each patient’s chance of successful recovery.

How Do Non-Healing Wounds Occur?

A wound is considered “non-healing” when standard treatments—such as wound care, medications, or even therapies like hyperbaric oxygen—have been tried without success. There are many reasons why a wound may not heal properly. Some common factors include poor circulation, malnutrition, inadequate wound care, nicotine use, uncontrolled diabetes, exposure of surgical hardware, or soft tissue defects. Other non-healing wounds may result from pressure-related injuries, previous surgeries, or complications after surgery.

When is surgery a viable option to consider?

Non-healing wounds are always a candidate for surgical intervention. It is the steps before surgery that determine the approach and success of healing.

The first step towards healing a patient’s wound would be an in-depth consultation where our surgeons and clinical team provide you with the tools to prepare for the stages of surgical intervention.

Our clinical team will review your complete medical history to make adjustments such as nicotine cessation, obtaining optimal glucose control, and when necessary, a course of antibiotics may be prescribed.

When Is Surgery a Viable Option to Consider?

Non-healing wounds are always candidates for surgical intervention, but the steps taken beforehand play a key role in determining the approach and success of treatment.

The first step is an in-depth consultation, where our surgeons and clinical team work with you to prepare for every stage of surgical care. During this process, we will review your full medical history and make important adjustments to optimize healing. This may include nicotine cessation, improved glucose control, and, when necessary, a course of antibiotics.

What Sets Thrive Apart?

The surgeons at Thrive Reconstructive Surgery take on some of the most complex cases, specializing in the treatment of non-healing wounds. We believe in an all-encompassing approach to care, addressing every aspect of the healing process to give patients the best possible outcomes.

We recognize that successful healing often involves many people along the journey—caretakers, wound care facilities, cardiologists, and referring providers. That’s why we work hand in hand with everyone involved to fully understand the unique circumstances of each case.

By carefully reviewing and understanding each patient’s complete medical history, we create personalized treatment plans designed to meet individual needs and support long-term healing.
