At Thrive Reconstructive Surgery, we pride ourselves on having established strong, lasting partnerships with leading cardiothoracic surgeons across the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Through these collaborations, our team has developed specialized expertise in sternal reconstruction. Using carefully planned, multi-staged procedures, we work alongside cardiothoracic surgeons to help ensure the best possible ourcomes following complex, critical operations.

When is Sternal Reconstruction the best option for me?

Sternal reconstruction surgery is typically performed following a cardiothoracic procedure (for example: a coronary artery bypass graft) that requires soft tissue coverage of the sternum (chest.) Another instance where a sternal reconstruction would be necessary would be after an osteomyelitis of the sternal bone following various open heart surgeries. Our reconstructive surgeons utilize local flaps to reconstruct sternal defects. Thrive’s goal is to make patient whole again and back to their previous lifestyles as quickly as possible.

Sternal reconstruction surgery is often needed after certain cardiothoracic procedures, such as a coronary artery bypass graft when the sternum (chest bone) requires soft tissue coverage. It may also be necessary in cases of osteomyelitis (infection of the sternum) that can occur after open-heart surgery.

Our reconstructive surgeons use advanced techniques, including local flaps, to repair sternal defects. Thrive’s goal is simple: to help patients heal fully and return to their daily lives as quickly and safely as possible.

What Sets Thrive Apart?

We take pride in our long-lasting, trusted partnerships with specialists throughout the community. In multi-staged reconstructions like sternal repair, the surgeons at Thrive Reconstructive Surgery begin with a debridement or exploratory procedure to determine the type of coverage needed. During this stage, our team works side by side with the cardiothoracic surgeon who performed the original operation to ensure seamless, coordinated care.

In more complex cases, reconstruction may involve the use of a local muscle flap. Other treatment options can include local tissue rearrangement, additional muscle flaps, or, in rare instances, free tissue transfer.
